Mêlées and dot diamonds - what's the difference?
Mêlée diamonds
The term mêlée has its origins in French and is translated as "hand-to-hand combat". In the context of diamonds, this means a handful of diamonds. Mêlée diamonds typically include stones ranging in carat weight from 0.06 to 0.14 carats. They are therefore rarely sold as individual pieces, but in a set of many different sized stones sorted by size.
Point Diamonds
Point diamonds are even lighter and smaller than mêlée diamonds.
Placed on a piece of paper, the diamond is often no larger than a point - according to the definition of a point diamond, 0.01 ct. Diamonds with 0.02 carats are therefore referred to as 2-point diamonds,
0.03 ct as a 3-point diamond, 0.04 ct as a 4-point diamond, etc.
The weight of diamonds
The weight of diamonds is defined as a cart. 1 carat corresponds to 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points. Small diamonds are represented in points, with 1 point equaling one hundredth part of a carat.
Carat Weight and Total Carat Weight
Carat Weight refers to the weight of individual diamonds and is given in carats. The total carat weight, on the other hand, refers to the total weight of the diamonds, for example melee diamonds or diamonds set in a piece of jewellery. In order not to falsify the total weight in the latter case, the total carat weight only refers to the stones without the setting.
